Abe Dunovits was born in Argentina, grew up in Spain and now resides in Western Australia. He is primarily a guitar player but also plays bass, percussion, sings and writes songs and poems. The first bands with whom he played guitar and sang in the early nineties were original Perth indie rock bands such as Rosie's Kitchen, The Whitlam Years and Spooky with whom he got moderate success, playing important support gigs and getting national airplay. Later on, upon re-discovering his Latin roots, he joined Latin band Malembe and later on formed ,together with percussionist Joe Naimo, the now renowned salsa big band Sabroson, helping gather some of the most talented musicians to come out of the Perth Jazz and Latin scene. Most recently,he played guitar in African-fusion band Shangara Jive, who supported Senegalese star Yossou N'Dour in his WA 2004 tour at the Concert Hall.
But Abe's interest in music does not stop at Latin or Pop music. He is a well experienced improvisor, having performed and recorded with experimental outfits Magick Trousers, Carcrash Face and Double/Tripe A Chthonic (with Anarchist Mar Bucknell, anti-poets Alan Boyd and Ashley Higgs, the latter now living in Melbourne) Abe has performed at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art "Putting on an Act", Club Zho and Guerrilla Sessions, both with improvising bands and as Ray Unit, his alter-ed performance character, taking the name from the main character in the seminal Tim Burns' 1975 Australian film "Against the Grain". Ray Unit has also appeared at Platform 1 Gallery in Melbourne and has released three albums, which get regular airplay on Perth's independent radio RTR FM. Abe has also appeared live on RTR with Spooky and other radio stations and has extensive recording and performing experience with Rosie's Kitchen, The Whitlam Years and Spooky, Shangara Jive and now Funkalleros having released a total of 5 albums with all these bands.
In addition to his musical career and as a music teacher in a public school in Perth, Abe has had and continues to have a successful Visual Art career as sculptor and painter, having had three solo exhibitions in Perth and Melbourne, as well as several group exhibitions since 1995. He has been commended for his paintings and sculptures at the Melville and Town of Vincent Art Awards and has recently made sculptures and provided many pieces from his collection for the WA produced children's TV series "Parallax". You can see Abe's quirky paintings and sculptures around the studio and art gallery of Parallax character Stefan Raddic, an eccentric artist in the series. The BBC, Channel 9 and ABC Australia have bought the series.
In 2005 Abe is still at Kwinana SHS teaching music and also being a music coach for the TV series "STREETSMARTZ", another Paul Barron production, this time about kid buskers in Fremantle. He even scored a part as an extra in episode 13 and 23! He is also doing some real busking with friends on the streets of Fremantle.
In 2007 abe is back at KSHS after nearly a year away travelling, producing art and music. To view some of the pics go to www.myspace.com/rayunitburns. FUNKALLEROS are finishing their second album right now and we are all very excited at the way it is turning out...more soon
